  • Cannabis Dispensary Society, MedUser (guest) wrote 15 years ago:
The place is a heat-score. It is under periodic surveillance, since the management is associated with the Vancouver Seed Bank (yet another corrupt and self-serving establishment, with several dubious characters working there), which is known for trafficking in cannabis buds. Dori, the woman who manages the Dispensary, has stated that she's afraid of getting busted, just because a few registered medical-user clients share joints. She bans and kicks out people for no good reason, accuses people of theft/dealing/not being conducive to a healing environment, and without support of membership provides financial support to the in-your-face and highly confrontational Marc Emery. There is a large degree of staff turnover; many have quit and have quietly started to deal weed to medical users by themselves, in their home areas. It's OK to be a member at the Dispensary, and to even share/deal the product, as long as one is very very discreet. Dori knows about the dealing, and just doesn't want it to become general public knowledge, let alone a court case for herself. She's not very intelligent or compassionate.

If you ever feel in danger in this area, during the day, go here. It's the safest place in this area.

Just a clarification of the above comment: IS STILL HERE. Part of the building was demolished in 2005 or 2006 and now, as stated in the article, the old Woodwards Block is being redeveloped.

The library is the best part, at least from a booklover's point of view. Not a large library, but a pleasant little place to hang out to read and use the public computers.
  • Whole Foods, vanhanfer wrote 16 years ago:
Great food shopping store, although somewhat overpriced. The friendliness of staff and quality of organic foods is very high. Check it out.
  • Uprising Bakery, vanhanfer wrote 16 years ago:
One of the best bakeries in Vancouver. Highly recommended.
  • Akali Singh Sikh Temple, fallen_child (guest) wrote 16 years ago:
Yes, I've been there and the food is as good as the vibes are bad. I got served 2 standard (small) servings of food (which was pretty tasty, but not enough), and when I went back for more the guy behind the kitchen serving counter said "No more" and turned his back on me. I think he was more holy and moral and pure than me, and he sure showed it. Not a good way to improve community relations. I wish them the best luck. And new kitchen serving staff. I feel sorry for all the Punjabi wives that are beaten and killed by their own loving husbands. They need to be nicer to everyone.

Small, conservative temple where everyone sits on the floor as proper equals during the community meals, after Sunday services around 1 pm. One should remove shoes, wear a headcover, and be seen to wash one's hands before a meal. Warm and friendly, and like any traditional Sikh temple, is open to any member of the community for visits, conversations, meditation, and meals. The men are quietly welcoming, and the women's clothing is amazingly colourful. The food is vegetarian, home/temple-style, hot and fresh, and very nourishing. A priest is usually around to converse about spiritual matters (through a translator, if needed). A wonderful little neighbourhood temple. Sat sri akal.

  • Ross Street Gurdwara, vanhanfer wrote 16 years ago:
Open to the public at all times. Vegetarian meals served around noontime daily. Wash hands, wear cloth or hat over head. Despite the glares and frowns of a very few old-style Sikh members, whites and all members of the local public are welcome at all Sikh temples. Otherwise very warm and friendly. Good, healthy homemade-type hot food, especially at lunchtime. The many bright colours of the women's clothing are beautiful. Sat sri akal.
  • Alexandra Park, vanhanfer (guest) wrote 16 years ago:
Pleasant alternate location to English Bay Beach, which is just across the road. When the beach is too crowded, this park offers a quiet grassy slope for sunbathing or reading. May have a few friendly drunks hanging around. Public transport and lots of shops are nearby on Davie and Denman. Watching a sunset here is beautiful.
  • English Bay, First Beach/Sunset Beach, vanhanfer (guest) wrote 16 years ago:
Lovely area, with public transport and many shops very close by. Often the location of the Celebration of Light fireworks display, usually every summer. Good place to start a walk around Stanley Park, following the SeaWall; total ocean walk (depending on personal pace) is about 2 to 3 hours. Small, narrow beach with hundreds of people on a summer day, even in the middle of the week. There is an occasional police presence, so use of alcoholic drinks and other treats should be discreet. Lots of shopping nearby on Denman and Davie streets.
